How to Get Involved

Apply to Volunteer

Since 2003, PCO has hosted over 213 international volunteers from across the globe. PCO has partnered with reputable volunteer organizations such as Global Volunteer Network, AFS, and a number of universities and companies. If you are interested in coming to volunteer with PCO, please contact PCO at: volunteer@populationcaring.org.

choosing a work program

All volunteers may decide what program(s) they would like to be involved in. Please review our program page to see in what ways PCO is supporting the Liberian Refugee Community in Ghana as well as surrounding Ghanaian communities. Some volunteers may apply with a specific program in mind, while many arrive here still unsure about what they want to do. While we often have particular needs in one program, the choice of which program to work in is always yours.

length of stay

The length of your stay with us is also entirely your decision. It is recommended that you stay for at least two months in order to really gain an understanding of the culture and to achieve the most in your program of work. That being said, we understand that many peoples’ schedules will not allow them to stay in Ghana that long, and we have many volunteers who stay only several weeks.

accommodation

The organization manages a guest house that is able to accommodate up to 14 volunteers at a time. PCO provides volunteers with airport transfer from and to Buduburam, adequate daily food, and safe drinking water.

Our guesthouse is located in the town of Awutu, about a five minute drive outside of Buduburam camp. Transportation to and from camp is extremely easy, and PCO provides a stipend for volunteers to pay for the trotro (vans) each day.

costs

PCO survives mainly through the support of its international volunteers, who with their expertise, curiosity, creativity, and donations allow us to serve our communities, build localized expertise, and make contributions to lasting peace in West Africa.

Volunteer costs cover accommodation, three meals, safe drinking water, bathing water, transportation within Ghana (to/from camp & to/from airport), as well as support the operation of PCO projects, such as the Free School, The Mother Skill Training Center, and Peace Cells.
